The sub-basement of the Calloway Library smelled of wet stone and something older than dust — a mineral sweetness, like a struck match held underwater. Mina had not meant to find the stair. She had meant only to catalog the crate of ledgers left behind by the last archivist, a man who had died, as far as anyone could tell, mid-sentence.

The lantern had been wedged beneath a loose flagstone, as if someone had pried the floor up and tucked it away on purpose. It was heavier than its size suggested, the brass gone the color of an old bruise, and when she lifted it, something inside shifted — not oil, something drier, like seeds in a gourd.

Mina

Someone hid this. You don't bury a lantern under a floor by accident.

A voice answered from the stacks before she saw its owner — dry, careful, pitched low as though the shelves themselves might be listening.

Oren

Put it down, Miss Calder. Whatever you think you've found, it found you first.

She turned. Oren stood in the archway between the ledger room and the map vault, a lamp of his own held low, as if he didn't want it to show his face. He was the keeper of the maps — the real ones, the ones not meant for patrons, the ones that charted things the library's public floor plan pretended did not exist.

Mina

You know what this is.

Oren

I know what it opens. That is a different, worse kind of knowing.

He crossed the room slowly, the way a man approaches a dog that has not yet decided whether to bite. Up close, his eyes went to the lantern's seams, the small sliding panel on its base, the symbol scratched faintly into the brass — three concentric rings, the innermost one broken.

Oren

Broken ring. That means the stair below is unsealed. It means someone went down after the flood of '29 and never thought to seal it again — or couldn't.

Mina

There's a stair.

Oren

There was never not a stair. We only pretended the building had a floor it stopped at. Nineteen steps down, behind the third map cabinet, under a lie about load-bearing walls I wrote myself, in my own hand, in the maintenance log.

Mina felt the lantern grow warmer in her palm, though no flame burned inside it — only that faint, seed-like rattle, as if whatever filled it was waking to the sound of its own name.

Mina

Why would you write a lie in your own log?

Oren

Because the truth was worse than a lie, and I was younger then, and I believed that burying a thing was the same as ending it. I was wrong about that. I am often wrong about that.

He looked, finally, not at the lantern but at her face — searching it the way he might search a disputed border on an old survey, hunting the line where confidence ends and guesswork begins.

Oren

If I take you down there, Miss Calder, you don't get to come back up and be the same careful girl who files things in alphabetical order. I need you to understand that before you decide you're brave.

Mina

I was never that girl. I only filed things alphabetically because it was the only order anyone let me keep.

Something in Oren's face loosened, briefly, like a knot given an inch of slack. He turned without another word and walked toward the third map cabinet, and Mina — lantern cradled against her ribs like something that might still choose to wake — followed him into the dark behind the lie.
